She's among the few characters to seriously question Shepard's decisions, particularly when it comes to Cerberus, and she's willing to challenge you-at gunpoint, if necessary-when she feels that you're in the wrong.

But I'll give you the short version: Ash is one of the most substantially well-rounded characters in the series and one of the few that doesn't need Shepard to step in and fix her life. Earlier in the year I wrote a long defense of Ash Williams for Official Xbox Magazine, which appeared on our sister site GamesRadar+ in November. This isn't the most disappointed I've been by democracy in 2016, but it's in the top five. I voted Ashley for 3rd place, behind Garrus and Mordin. Look, I'm very sorry everybody, but 13th place is a travesty. She's not many people's favourite character, clearly, but I'm just relieved she beat Kaidan and James Vega in this list.
I'm aware you can find Kasumi in Mass Effect 3 and its Citadel DLC, although sadly I didn't for some reason, even though I kept her alive in Mass Effect 2. In battle, Kasumi's Shadow Strike ability means she's one of the game's more visually interesting party members, too, vanishing and then popping up behind an enemy to damage them. You're rewarded with a total gut punch of an ending that perfectly completes her arc. It becomes clear to Shepard how badly she's been wounded by his death, and you get to help her exact revenge on Donovan Hock, his killer. Her back story with Keiji, her former partner in crime, is explored in a powerful, heartfelt way in her Stealing Memory loyalty mission. If you went in pursuit of your shipmates and their captors immediately, you’d have saved them all.Kasumi's Stolen Memory is probably my favourite DLC across the Mass Effect trilogy-it lets Shepard play at being James Bond by infiltrating a party at a mansion, and Kasumi's introduction as a slick, invisible thief (as well as something of a loner) makes her seem very different to the rest of the Normandy's crew. Chakwas, who won’t be afraid to tell you off. In fact, if you end up taking on at least four more missions after the crew’s abducted before going through the Omega 4 Relay, then all of them will perish – except for Dr. Doing at least one more mission after the crew’s abducted means half of them will die. However, you’ll still have time to do one more mission before the Collectors snatch your humble Normandy employees away, but that’s it. So, in summary, before you get the Reaper IFF, make sure you complete all loyalty missions (except Legion’s, obviously) and any other side missions or assignments. This is the perfect time to do Legion’s loyalty mission, as this is the only time you’ll be able to earn said geth’s allegiance pre-Collector Base if you want to rescue the entire crew. Whilst EDI is installing said IFF, you’ll be allowed to do at least one more mission before we cut to the Normandy kidnappings. In said Reaper IFF mission, you’ll obtain geth squad member, Legion, and activate him (because why wouldn’t you).
Then, the Collectors come and abduct the crew. Once it counts down and you access the Galaxy Map, a cutscene starts where you and your squadmates go off on a mission. When you complete the mission in retrieving the Reaper IFF, what’s essentially an in-game ticking clock will start.
Like when you’re trying to peacefully resolve the Tali and Legion fight, saving the entirety of the Normandy Crew is all about timing. It’s a cutscene that’s still uneasy on the eyes. By the time I got there, half my crew, including favourite space secretary, Kelly Chambers, were processed into Human Reaper paste-fuel. Instead of choosing to go through the Omega 4 Relay after the Collectors abducted everyone on the ship, I chose to take more time to prepare. The consequence of mistiming your rescue of the Normandy crew in Mass Effect 2 first hit me hard like a ton of metaphorical bricks.
